Colorado State Veterinarian’s office

The Colorado State Veterinarian’s office has reported the following information: as of September 20th, 2018, the Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) Incident in Colorado has resulted in only one confirmed positive EIA horse in Colorado which is the index case. The index premises in Weld County is under a quarantine order; two associated premises are under hold orders. Fifty-one (51) premises are under hold orders in 20 Colorado counties: Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Crowley, Delta, Douglas, Eagle, Elbert, El Paso, Fremont, Gilpin, Gunnison, Huerfano, Jefferson, Larimer, Mesa, Moffat, Montrose, Phillips, and Weld Counties. The counties are not under Hold Orders, only the premises within the counties are under the Hold Orders until re-testing is complete. 122 exposed horses that left the index premises have been located in Colorado and are under Hold Orders. 124 exposed horses under quarantine on the index premises tested negative for EIA last week; they will be re-tested on or after 10/19/2018 (sixty days after last exposure to the positive horse). Fifty-seven (57) exposed horses that left the State have been positively identified in nine other states: Arizona, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Nebraska, Nevada, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wyoming. Some of the exposed horses will be eligible for their final 60-day EIA re-test in the next week – CDA is working with those individual horse owners and their veterinarians so that the Hold Orders can be released on a final negative test.
