Arizona State Veterinarian

On October 19, 2018 the Arizona State Veterinarian confirmed Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in a yearling filly which exhibited neurological signs in Maricopa County.Another yearling on the property had been to an event 3 weeks prior and was showing neurologic signs, but at this time has tested negative for EHV. The facility in Maricopa county was placed under quarantine for EHM. A hold order was placed on the facility on October 20th. Temperatures are being monitored twice a day for the duration of the quarantine. Any horse that displays fever or clinical signs compatible with EHM will be reported to the State Veterinarian and will be tested. The event organizer where the yearling was exhibited was notified, and will reach out to contestants to recommend enhanced observation of horses and to increase biosecurity measures.
