Rhode Island State Veterinarian

The Rhode Island State Veterinarian has reported a barn at a stable in Providence County, RI is under quarantine after confirmation of Strep equi. equi via PCR on a nasopharyngeal sample. The horse was recently imported by a New Hampshire based rescue group and was sourced at an auction in Pennsylvania. The attending veterinarian reported that the horse was being worked up for nasal discharge and possible pneumonia. The affected horse is a 2.5 year old miniature mare that was housed in an isolation barn at a boarding facility that houses about 50 horses. The affected horse was placed into the isolation barn upon arrival and has not had contact with any other horses at the farm. The farm has biosecurity protocols in place routinely for horses that go into the isolation barn, so at this time the order of quarantine only encumbers the isolation barn and the horses contained therein.
