Arizona State Veterinarian

Number Confirmed: 1;
Breed: Burro
Notes: A recently gathered wild burro has tested positive for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) resulting in the BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro facility in Florence, AZ being quarantined until further notice. All animals adopted or sold before July 24 were not exposed. BLM is working closely with state and federal animal health officials to monitor the animals at the facility and determine appropriate next steps. All animals entering the Florence facility are tested for EIA. This standard practice allowed the BLM to quickly identify and address the positive test result. The BLM has contacted people who adopted or purchased animals from the facility after July 24 and those animals have been returned to the facility for monitoring. All adoptions and sales are on hold at the Florence, AZ facility until the quarantine is lifted. The quarantine will be lifted after state and federal animal health officials determine it is safe to resume normal operations. For more info go to:
