February 03, 2016
A horse was presented to the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine Large Animal Teaching Hospital on January 31, 2015 showing signs of nystagmus and ataxia. History revealed no history of fever or respiratory disease. Due to progressive worsening of clinical signs the next day, a spinal tap and nasal swab was performed. Due to the results of the spinal tap and the resulting poor prognosis, the horse was euthanized. The swab was submitted on February 1, 2016 and reported confirmed positive EHV-1 on February 2, 2016. By the end of February 2, 2016, the UGA CVM equine facilities are under quarantine (20 equine present) and is temporarily closed. The facility of origin of the positive horse, a GA facility, is under quarantine and has a protocol in place for all equine that were present in the facility at the same time as the positive horse. Five horses had already departed from the facility have been contacted and are being evaluated for quarantine. One horse was allowed to leave the facility after the confirmatory test. This horse showing no clinical signs was moved on a VS 1-27 to a quarantine premise.
