Quarantine Released

NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets

Number Confirmed: 2;
Facility Type: Racetrack;
Notes: Barn 19 and Barn 21 (which housed 1 horse belonging to the same trainer) at Vernon Downs Racetrack in Vernon, NY (Oneida Co.) have been released from EHV-1 quarantine effective May 25, 2022. No additional cases were detected in Barns 19 and 21 during the 21 day quarantine. In summary, a total of 2 horses from that trainer were diagnosed with EHM. The first case was the initial gelding who died and was necropsied at Cornell. Samples obtained through necropsy confirmed the gelding’s diagnosis. The second case was the neurologic filly who was euthanized and also confirmed through diagnostic testing at Cornell. A second gelding who was sent to Cornell for observation and diagnostic evaluation tested negative for EHV-1 repeatedly and returned to Vernon Downs Barn 21. That gelding never showed any signs consistent with EHV-1 after returning to the track. No other reports of EHV-1 were reported from Vernon Downs Racetrack during the last 21 days.;
