Comments: On 9/2/2022 an adult standardbred mare presented with mild head-pressing, hind limb ataxia, lethargy and fever. She was not currently vaccinated. She subsequently died, despite supportive treatment, as had one other horse on the premises with a very similar clinical presentation, just prior to the onset of her illness. On 9/23/2022 test results confirmed that she was IgM positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus. The Indiana State Board of Animal Health encourages all equine owners to vaccinate their animals for the mosquito-borne illnesses, as we continue to see these viruses each year. For more information about Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), go to: EEE Factsheet.
