Providence County, RI
Outbreak Identifier: 5843
Alert ID: 3279
September 08, 2023
Suspected Case - No Quarantine

State Veterinarian

Number Confirmed: 1;
Number Exposed: Unknown;
Facility Type: Private Facility;
Age: 2; Gender: Mare; Breed: Miniature Donkey; Onset of Clinical Signs: 9/3/2023;
Clinical Signs: The donkey was presented to the referring veterinarian with acute onset of neurological signs. It was not noted how long the signs were present before the veterinarian was called. The donkey was euthanized and samples were submitted for rabies and viral encephalitis. Rabies was negative but EEE was positive by PCR with a low Ct score at the area NAHLN lab. Samples were forwarded to NVSL for confirmation but I have confidence in the results of the NAHLN testing.; Confirmation Date: 9/6/2023; Horse Status: Euthanized; Vaccination Status: Unvaccinated;
Comments: State mosquito surveillance for EEE has determined that positive mosquitos were trapped in the same vicinity of this donkey. Neighboring states near this vicinity have also revealed positive mosquitos. The species of mosquitoes in some of these positive mosquito pools are known to bite both mammals and birds. State environmental and health officials provide regular (usually weekly) press releases on surveillance for EEE and WNV in mosquitos.;
