Alert ID: 363
November 13, 2016
No horses at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center (LAEC), displayed fevers or compatible clinical signs on November 11, 2016 and November 12, 2016. The two febrile horses added to isolation quarantine on November 10, 2016 tested negative on nasal swab and blood for Equine Herpesvirus -1. Samples will be collected from both horses in 72 hours to confirm negative status. One of these two febrile horses was from an LAEC barn that was not under quarantine. Out of an abundance of caution, the quarantine was expanded to include barn of origin for the febrile horse. Enhanced biosecurity measures are in place in all barns under quarantine and all horses’ temperatures are monitored twice daily. Eleven horses currently reside in quarantined isolation – five of these horses have been confirmed with neurologic symptoms (EHM cases). All confirmed positive horses remain in quarantined isolation and continue to stabilize and show improvement. The LAEC horses that attended the horse show in Las Vegas most likely contracted EHV-1 on their return to the LAEC, following a short incubation period. CDFA veterinarians, livestock inspectors and USDA animal health technicians continue to monitor the quarantine and incident situation on-site and will provide additional updates as they become available.
