On Tuesday, January 10, 2017 two suspect horses that had previously tested negative for EHV-1 on both nasal and blood samples retested positive for EHV1 non-neuropathogenic strain at the LA Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab (LADDL). One of the horses retested negative on blood but positive on nasal samples. The other was positive on both blood and nasal samples. Another new febrile horse from barn 30 tested positive for EHV1 non-neuropathogenic strain on both blood and nasal samples. All 3 horses have been placed into isolation and the barns are under quarantine. On January 12, 2017, a horse in Barn 20 spiked a temperature of 104 and test results on blood and nasal samples are reported negative and retesting protocols will be followed. Three barns were tested for future quarantine release on Wednesday and results are as follows: Nine (9) horses in Barn 36, nineteen (19) horses in Barn 14 and two (2) horses in the Receiving Barn have been reported positive for EHV1 non-neuropathogenic strain. To date, test results report that thirty-eight (38) horses tested positive for EHV1 non-neuropathogenic strain and two (2) tested positive for EHV1 neuropathogenic strain. Sixty-five (65) horses that were potentially exposed to EHV-1 in a receiving barn prior to January 2nd have been traced, isolated and are currently in the testing process. The entire premise of the Fair Grounds Racetrack was placed under quarantine with racing still allowed with barns not symptomatic or test positive. Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry, USDA, and Racing Commission veterinarians continue to work with track personnel in responding to the incident at the Fair Grounds.
