Columbia County, FL
Alert ID: 459
February 10, 2017
On February 9, one premise in Columbia County, Florida was placed under quarantine for strangles. The index case was recently purchased from a known distributor of horses from the Bastrop, Louisiana based facility. The distributor makes requests on Facebook for places for rescued horses until permanent homes can be located. This is a spinoff from horses coming from the Bastrop Kill Pen in Louisiana. Horse owners are advised to perform due diligence before accepting any of these horses. Horses coming to Florida with strangles have recently been traced back to this distributor and have infected owner’s resident horses. This is the first case for both Columbia County and case 10 for Florida in 2017.
