On March 7, one premise in Jefferson County, Florida was placed under quarantine for strangles. The horses from these “Kill Pen Rescues” are being advertised on Facebook and other social media with an individual’s name with the tagline Help Save Horses from Slaughter. A description including breed, age, sex, color, height, soundness, price plus additional Coggins fee and training level are routinely listed. These horses most often come from Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. On Facebook, potential buyers are asked to comment with city and state to obtain an additional hauling fee. Somewhere on the ad, the horse’s deadline until slaughter, which is routinely 2 to 4 days away, will be listed. The ad will also contain the verbiage “No signs of sickness now!” and payment is by cash or Paypal. This case was recently imported from a Tennessee “Kill Pen Rescue” in late February without clinical signs at time of import. The horse developed clinical signs approximately 7 days after arriving into Florida where it is the only horse on the property. The horse has not left the facility since arrival. This the first case for Jefferson County and case 12 for Florida in 2017.
