North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

A 14-year-old female mule in Johnston County was confirmed to have equine infectious anemia. The disease was discovered through a routine blood test by the N.C. Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Raleigh and confirmed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is the first new case of EIA documented in North Carolina since 2005. The Johnston County facility is under a quarantine restricting movement of equine until further testing is completed by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The affected mule was euthanized. The remaining equines at the facility were tested and were negative for EIA. These horses will be observed and retested in 60 days. Neighboring facilities are being monitored for the disease. For more information go to:  http://www.ncagr.gov/paffairs/release/2017/EIApositivemule.htm
