Eastern Equine Encephalitis

Holmes and Madison Counties, FL

Three new cases of EEE were confirmed Holmes, Marion and Madison Counties within Florida with date of onset ranging between July 16th to July 19th. The test results returned positive for all cases on July 24th. Two horses were 2 year olds and the other was a 5 year old. All horses had not traveled within the past month and none had ever received vaccinations. One horse was euthanized due to poor prognosis at time of initial exam and the other two passed on due to natural causes. This is the first occurrence for Holmes county and the second occurrence for Marion and Madison counties for the 2015 calendar year.
