West Nile Virus

The New York State Dept of Agriculture and Markets is confirming the state’s second 2018 West Nile Virus case in a horse from Watermill, NY (Suffolk County). The 5-year old mare showed signs on Aug 20, 2018. The horse was febrile, off feed and had difficulty eating and possibly breathing. The horse went down overnight and died on Aug 21, 2018. Blood sample results for WNV along with concurrent signs of illness confirmed active WNV infection. The horse had not been vaccinated for WNV. The horse had no recent travel history.
